Location: Remote
We are seeking a Senior Environment Artist to help define, build, and elevate the visual quality of our environments. This role is responsible not only for producing high-quality environment art, but also for owning large sections of the world, contributing to visual direction, and mentoring other artists while collaborating closely with design, lighting, and engineering.
The ideal candidate demonstrates strong artistic judgment, technical execution, and the ability to operate with a high degree of autonomy on large-scale environment content.
Responsibilities
Environment Art Creation & Ownership
- Create high-quality environment assets and set dressing that meet established visual, technical, and performance standards
- Own large environment areas or major world features from blockout through final polish, including composition, scale, and visual storytelling
- Take responsibility for the quality, completeness, and on-time delivery of assigned environment spaces
- Ensure environments support gameplay, readability, and player navigation
Large-Scale Environment Workflows
- Apply proven workflows for large-scale or open environments, including modular construction and asset reuse strategies
- Use trim sheets, tileables, and shared materials to support efficient content creation and memory-conscious environments
- Collaborate with Design and Technical Art to ensure environments scale effectively across large playable spaces
Materials, Textures & Surface Quality
- Create and implement high-quality materials using material layering and texture blending techniques
- Author and maintain trim sheets that support multiple asset types while preserving visual consistency
- Demonstrate strong understanding of material definition, surface breakup, and wear logic
Visual Quality & Consistency
- Uphold and help evolve the project’s visual bar and style guidelines
- Identify visual issues in environments and propose solutions proactively
- Collaborate with Lighting, VFX, and Technical Art to achieve final scene quality
Technical & Pipeline Awareness
- Create assets that are optimized for performance, memory, and engine constraints
- Work effectively within established pipelines, tools, and naming conventions
- Identify pipeline inefficiencies related to large-scale production and suggest improvements
Collaboration & Leadership
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Design, Engineering, and Production
- Provide constructive feedback and art reviews for other environment artists
- Mentor mid-level and junior artists through example, feedback, and guidance
Required Qualifications
Artistic & Technical Skills
- Strong portfolio demonstrating high-quality environment art for games or real-time applications
- Demonstrated experience creating and using trim sheets in production
- Strong understanding of material and texture blending workflows (e.g., layered materials, vertex blending, masks)
- Solid grasp of modular environment construction and asset reuse for large-scale environments
- Expert-level proficiency in industry-standard tools (e.g., Maya/Blender, ZBrush, Substance Painter/Designer)
- Proven experience working in Unreal Engine
Experience
- 5+ years of professional experience in environment art for games or real-time content
- Shipped at least one title or equivalent large-scale project
- Demonstrated experience owning large chunks of environment work or major world areas with minimal oversight
Soft Skills
- Ability to independently plan, execute, and deliver complex environment work
- Strong communication skills and the ability to clearly articulate artistic and technical decisions
- Receptive to feedback and capable of providing thoughtful critique
- Comfortable mentoring and supporting less-experienced artists
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Qualifications
- Experience with open-world or hub-based environments
- Familiarity with world partitioning, streaming, or level-of-detail workflows
- Experience collaborating closely with level design on large playable spaces
- Knowledge of performance profiling and optimization techniques
- Experience contributing to or defining environment art style guides
