Sr. Environment Concept Artist

Location: Remote

We are seeking a Senior Environment Concept Artist to help define and visualize the worlds of our game. This role is responsible for creating high-quality environment concepts that establish mood, composition, architectural language, and world identity, while working closely with Environment Art, Environment Design, and Level Design to ensure concepts translate effectively into playable spaces.

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong visual storytelling, world-building sensibility, and the ability to think both creatively and systemically about environments.

Responsibilities

Environment Concept Creation & Ownership

  • Create high-quality environment concepts that define locations, regions, and world spaces
  • Own major environment concepts or location sets from early ideation through production handoff
  • Develop concepts that communicate mood, scale, composition, and narrative intent
  • Ensure concepts are clear, actionable, and usable by production teams

World Building & Visual Development

  • Establish architectural language, material palettes, and environmental motifs
  • Explore variations in lighting, weather, time-of-day, and mood
  • Contribute to the overall visual direction and identity of the game world

Collaboration & Production Support

  • Collaborate closely with Environment Art, Environment Design, Level Design, and Narrative
  • Provide paintovers, callouts, and breakdowns to support production implementation
  • Adapt and iterate on concepts based on gameplay, technical, or production constraints

Visual Consistency & Quality

  • Maintain consistency in style, scale, and world logic across environment concepts
  • Help define and uphold environment art style guides
  • Identify visual inconsistencies and propose solutions

Mentorship & Leadership

  • Provide constructive feedback and guidance to other concept artists
  • Mentor mid-level and junior environment concept artists
  • Participate in art reviews and cross-discipline discussions

Required Qualifications

Artistic & Conceptual Skills

  • Strong portfolio demonstrating high-quality environment concept art
  • Excellent understanding of:
    • Composition, perspective, and scale
    • Lighting, color theory, and atmosphere
    • Architectural and environmental design principles
  • Ability to communicate complex environment ideas clearly and efficiently

Tools & Workflow

  • Expert-level proficiency in digital painting tools (e.g., Photoshop, Procreate)
  • Experience with photobashing, kitbashing, or hybrid workflows
  • Familiarity with 3D blockouts or paintovers to support spatial accuracy (e.g., Blender, Unreal, SketchUp)

Experience

  • 5+ years of professional experience in environment concept art for games, film, or related media
  • Shipped at least one title or equivalent large-scale project
  • Demonstrated experience owning key environment concepts or world locations

Soft Skills

  • Ability to independently ideate, iterate, and deliver complex environment concepts
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain visual decisions to cross-disciplinary teams
  • Receptive to feedback and capable of providing thoughtful critique
  • Comfortable mentoring and supporting less-experienced artists

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Qualifications

  • Experience working on open-world or large-scale game environments
  • Familiarity with game production pipelines and real-time constraints
  • Experience collaborating directly with level or environment designers
  • Ability to support production with paintovers, callouts, and documentation
  • Experience contributing to or maintaining environment art style guides
