Sr. Tech Artist (World Building)

Location: Remote

We are seeking a Senior Technical Artist to support and scale world building through materials, tools, and technical workflows in Unreal Engine. This role is responsible for owning technical art systems that enable environment artists and environment designers to build large, high-quality worlds efficiently and consistently.

The ideal candidate combines strong artistic sensibility with technical expertise, and is comfortable operating at the intersection of art pipelines, procedural systems, and in-engine tooling.

Responsibilities

World Building Support & Ownership

  • Support large-scale world building through technical workflows, systems, and tooling
  • Own technical art solutions that enable efficient assembly and iteration of environments
  • Partner with Environment Art and Environment Design to ensure assets and worlds scale effectively
  • Identify technical limitations in world building and propose practical solutions

Materials & Shading Systems

  • Design, implement, and maintain master material frameworks in Unreal Engine
  • Support material layering, texture blending, and world-aligned workflows
  • Optimize materials for performance, memory, and scalability across large environments
  • Collaborate with Environment Art to ensure materials meet visual and production needs

In-Engine Tools & Workflow Development

  • Develop and maintain in-engine tools using Unreal Engine (Blueprints, Editor Utility Widgets, Python, or C++)
  • Create tools to support world building, procedural placement, validation, and iteration
  • Improve artist and designer workflows through automation and tooling enhancements

Procedural & Systemic Workflows

  • Support or develop procedural world-building systems (e.g., PCG, Blueprint-based systems)
  • Collaborate with Environment Designers to balance procedural workflows with hand-authored content
  • Ensure procedural systems remain stable, scalable, and production-ready

Technical Performance & Pipeline Awareness

  • Profile and optimize content-related systems to meet performance and memory budgets
  • Ensure technical art solutions integrate cleanly with engine and production pipelines
  • Identify pipeline inefficiencies and help establish best practices

Collaboration & Mentorship

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with Art, Design, Engineering, and Production
  • Provide technical guidance and feedback to artists and designers
  • Mentor mid-level and junior technical artists

Required Qualifications

Technical Art & Engine Skills

  • Strong experience working as a Technical Artist in Unreal Engine
  • Deep familiarity with:
    • Unreal Engine material editor and shader workflows
    • World building and large-scale environment pipelines
    • Blueprint-based systems and editor scripting
  • Proven experience creating artist-facing tools or technical workflows

Artistic & Production Understanding

  • Solid understanding of environment art fundamentals, including modular construction and material usage
  • Ability to translate artistic requirements into technical solutions
  • Experience working closely with environment artists and world builders

Experience

  • 5+ years of professional experience in technical art or a related role
  • Shipped at least one title or equivalent large-scale project
  • Demonstrated experience owning technical art systems or tools used by multiple team members

Soft Skills

  • Ability to independently design and deliver complex technical art solutions
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Receptive to feedback and capable of providing constructive critique
  • Comfortable mentoring and supporting less-experienced team members

Preferred / Nice-to-Have Qualifications

  • Experience with Unreal Engine PCG, world partition, or data layers
  • Knowledge of C++ for extending Unreal Engine tools or systems
  • Experience supporting open-world or large-scale environments
  • Familiarity with performance profiling and debugging tools
  • Experience contributing to technical art documentation or best practices
