We are seeking a Senior Environment Designer to build, assemble, and maintain high-quality game worlds using existing 3D art assets and procedural tools. This role focuses on world construction, layout, and systemic assembly rather than asset creation, and operates at the intersection of level design, environment art, and technical systems.
The Senior Environment Designer owns large sections of the game world, works extensively in Unreal Engine, and leverages procedural generation tools (PCG) to create scalable, performant, and visually cohesive environments.
Responsibilities
World Building & Ownership
- Build and assemble large-scale game environments using existing 3D environment assets
- Own large chunks of the game world from initial layout through final in-game polish
- Ensure environments are visually cohesive, readable, and support gameplay intent
- Maintain consistent scale, proportion, and world logic across assigned areas
Procedural & Systemic Workflows
- Use Unreal Engine’s Procedural Content Generation (PCG) tools to populate and manage large environments
- Design and maintain procedural rulesets for foliage, props, and environmental dressing
- Balance procedural placement with hand-authored passes to achieve quality and control
Layout, Composition & Readability
- Apply strong understanding of environmental composition, landmarks, and player guidance
- Collaborate with Level Design to ensure layouts support gameplay flow and navigation
- Identify and resolve readability or traversal issues in complex spaces
Technical & Performance Awareness
- Assemble environments with awareness of streaming, memory, and performance constraints
- Work within world partitioning, level streaming, and LOD systems
- Collaborate with Technical Art and Engineering to resolve world-scale technical challenges
Collaboration & Leadership
- Collaborate closely with Environment Art, Level Design, Lighting, and Technical Art
- Provide feedback on asset usability, scale, and modularity
- Mentor mid-level and junior environment designers through guidance and example
Required Qualifications
World Building & Technical Skills
- Strong portfolio demonstrating in-engine world building and environment assembly
- Proven experience building large-scale environments in Unreal Engine
- Demonstrated experience using procedural tools (Unreal PCG, Blueprints, or similar systems)
- Strong understanding of:
- Modular environment construction
- Asset reuse and scalable world-building workflows
- Composition, readability, and spatial storytelling
Experience
- 5+ years of professional experience in environment design, world building, or level art
- Shipped at least one title or equivalent large-scale project
- Demonstrated experience owning major world areas or features with minimal oversight
Soft Skills
- Ability to independently plan, build, and deliver complex world areas
- Strong communication skills and the ability to articulate layout and world-building decisions
- Receptive to feedback and capable of providing clear, actionable critique
- Comfortable mentoring and supporting less-experienced team members
Preferred / Nice-to-Have Qualifications
- Experience with open-world or hub-based games
- Familiarity with Unreal World Partition, data layers, and streaming systems
- Experience working closely with procedural pipelines and technical art tools
- Understanding of lighting workflows and environmental storytelling
- Experience contributing to world-building guidelines or best practices
What Success Looks Like in This Role
- Delivers large, cohesive world areas that meet gameplay, visual, and technical goals
- Effectively uses PCG and systemic workflows to scale world building efficiently
- Identifies and resolves world-scale issues before they impact production
- Raises the overall quality and efficiency of the environment design team
